Tandanya set to reopen early next year

For more than 30 years, the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, known as Tandanya, has showcased the works of many talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Closed for just over a year now, the State Government has been working closely with Tandanya to identify building upgrades to ensure the reopening of the beloved cultural institute on Grenfell St and has committed $780,000 towards the work.

The planned improvements include:

  • mechanical services including replacement of some air-conditioning units
  • fire services including replacement of sprinkler heads
  • works associated with internal walls to address deterioration and internal doors to improve access
  • electrical works.

The centre, which is owned by the Aboriginal Lands trust and will also be refreshed with new carpet and paint, is set to reopen in January 2025. It is anticipated that further works will be required following its reopening.

The CEO of Tandanya Arts Program, Lee-Ann Tjunypa Buckskin, said:  “We are very pleased to have received this grant of $780,000 to address the short-term maintenance needs of the building, enabling us to open and deliver our program in January 2025."

The funding is part of the state government's commitment to supporting First Nations arts and culture which also includes project funding, strategic investment and funding for Aboriginal-led organisations.

Last financial year, about $1.2 million was spent on strategic projects and other programs that supports artists and organisations, in addition to the annual funding provided for Tandanya's operations.
