New homes set for West End Brewery site

The development of the 8.4ha former West End Brewery site will include 1000 new homes and mixed-use opportunities like commercial, hospitality and retail.

Of the new homes, around 20 per cent will be affordable housing.

Renewal SA will develop a master plan early next year for the development, with work set to start in 2025 and the first residents to begin moving in from 2027.

Construction of the new housing development is expected to create around 4000 full-time equivalent jobs across construction, plus about 187 ongoing retail jobs once complete.

Renewal SA Chief Executive Chris Menz said the master plan would deliver a world-class vision.

“We will be looking to leverage the resources and expertise of the private sector including development partners, investors, designers, consultants, and builders,” Mr Menz said.

“We’ll be looking for the best of local and interstate experience and investment and it’s my firm view that great outcomes are achieved when government and private sector work hand-in-hand.”

The West End Brewery closed in June 2021, marking the end of 135 years of brewing operations on the famed site.

Beer was first brewed there in 1886 as the Torrenside Brewery.

Some of the site's historic structures will be preserved including the Walkerville Brewhouse, Footings of Colonel William Light’s Cottage and the Riverbank Garden – which means the much-loved Riverbank Christmas Lights Display will also be retained.

The annual Christmas event attracts approximately 300,000 visitors each year and will continue to be run by West Torrens Council.
